When we started the Project the Foyer was called "base camp", though even we did not feel comfortable with the name. Pragmatism ruled the beginning: we, the curators, needed a base to plan the three "big weekends" with events in the three communities, we also wanted a place where guests could stay and eat, where a bureau could be installed and where the materials and everything else that we needed for the different activities could be stored. In our first agenda the events felt like mountaintops that we had to reach, to climb on at the top of a temperature curve and the Foyer was the grounding, the "before" and "afterwards" - the "always". We also liked the idea of ourselves being on the spot, inside the communities and experiencing the landscape, in the center of our own activities, being a part of it all, while we were doing the project and to know and feel what is going on. We kept telling: our work is exploration of the night on the border of the city by many artists, but we too felt like living into this night, so to speak doing research in the field.

I was very happy about the new name: Foyer. The expression derives from the Latin word for oven, stove. It has to do with the situation of different people collecting around the fire - something that happens naturally in the darkness. It has proved itself in its traditional meaning. The Foyer is kind of like having one foot in the neighbourhood's door.

What do I do in the Foyer itself? In some ways I feel like leading a "doublelife" —I am very focused on organising the events that take place elsewhere and I talk to many people in a very different language about the project than is used in the Foyer to describe the same things. I am very busy with making the Project public - dealing with the media, organizing mailings and the publicit, - producing a public recognition that is much higher than can be felt here in the Foyer.

In the Foyer itself I do one thing at a time, just what I feel or see that needs to be done. Being some kind of a "chief" I often ask other people to do things - there are situations where being the "chief" feels quite useful (and others where it weighs me down). It is part of my job not to get too involved, to think freely about the work, to look ahead. Watching the crew: a secret game between "letting go"and being happy. Being happy to have built a structure for others where they move freely — and then again feel the limits and sometims be authoritative, when something endangers the project. I take more responsibility for the communication with the outside and Andrea is more responsible for the inside. Eg. she is the one organising the take-down, I am just by her side. I have no duties in the daily life of the foyer, but I do like to work for it. I am talking a lot with the passers-by, with the walkers, with our neighbours and of course with the artists and women artists, which I don't do often enough. I am just too tired and too concentrated on production and sometimes I prefer taking the bin to the farmer’s dunghill with the little motorbike than to have a serious talk about fundamental artistic questions. For me, this kind of communication was what happened at the beginning, while talking to the artists about the project and selecting or developping their videos or performances etc. - now it is time for being and living together.

I studied Art History at the University of Basle- I have nearly finished but am still struggling with the last exams. While studying I got a small job at the Museum of contemporary Art in Basel and worked in and for the "Kaskadenkondensator" - a space for Art, where group of artists plan a monthly programme of music, art and performances. That was the place where I developped my first events and that is also where I first began to work with Andrea Saemann.

In the museum I worked for a very well-informed and critical but absent audience. There is a different but also a very specific audience that visits the Kaskadenkondensator — mainly artists. That’s what incites me most about Helle Nächte, talking to people that are not involved in the arts. It means that I have to think about ways of explaining myself in a different way and I like that.

Wonderful. At the beginning I felt euphoric, a little in love with everyone who works here. I have liked the buildings from the beginning and especially the calf-huts. It seems almost unbelievable that so many things are possible in an agglomeration like this and that things go so well - even within this neighbourhood and community. Half of our audience would not usually go to art events. I feel close to the people living in the Foyer. I miss everybody even if they leave for only a few days, but it is a strange sort of intimacy, - as I said, I am often tired and avoid intense encounters.

Wohnst du gerne hier?

Ja.

Yes. It is also very exhausting. But basically and to me surprisingly, I like it very much, even in the rain.

We talked a lot about this with the "builders" of the Foyer - Haimo and Martin. Looking back, I am very happy about each warm and comfortable addition that we organised. I think these things are especially important for the guests who arrive now - since they don't have as much time to acclimatize.

I find it funny how I am developping such intense feelings about my personal belongings: for example, I love my rubber boots and the little motorbike. There is a curious exchange of caring for each other, we are all not very good at looking after ourselves but everyone takes care of the others.

I never thought that I would be able to work here. It thought I would commute from the city. I thought that I would be opening my own front door, embracing my loved one, heaving a great sigh, and enjoying the quiet and neatness. It surprised me and it felt strange that I could not feel comfortable in my own home. I experience my own home as if I was about to move out - looking at every little thing around and thinking that I should pack it all away. A feeling of estrangement from my old life — that worries me.

Almost everything else surprised me in a positive way. I am very good at worrying and thought there would be many more crisis and difficulties - the money, the weather, internal squabbling - I was prepared for it all.
