Tuesday with horrible news - where in the morning a drawing class is sitting in front of our houses to draw the landscape / work is to be done / "floating" seems far away / it is easy to hurt each other / working guest: Kate Henderson

What brings you to the Foyer?
I came to the Foyer to visit friends, have a holiday in the sun and relax.
Where have you come from - what is your background?
I live in Glasgow in 'Fourwalls', a women's housing co-operative. The house was built 6 or 7 years ago and is, more-or-less, a traditional Glasgow tenement building - 11 flats organised around one main stairway. The original idea for the building was much grander and was to include many more communal spaces, more shared-living spaces, more land around the building, workshop rooms etc. Because of the way in which the building had to be funded the original plans had to be radically scaled down and so now we have a smaller version of the original. Apart from the flats themselves we have a small garden, communal laundry, meeting room and another room whose use changes over time. We are in the middle of Glasgow in an area that is a little rundown but which is slowly being developed, situated between the city centre and the west-end of Glasgow. Our hope is that, in the future, we can build on the success of this first house - to realise some of the original plans in another building project.
In the late 80's and early 90's I was also part of a women's arts organisation called Women In Profile - which initiated a broad range of arts events and projects in Glasgow. The first space that we had was a small warehouse in the city centre . When we moved in it was a raw space with no windows or interior walls, no running water, no heating. We had little money to make the changes that we wanted to to the building and so the work was done gradually, as and when we needed something. Shortly after moving in Bobby Baker, a performance artist from London, visited to perform her work - she needed plug points and as the audience arrived so did the plug points. I liked the basic nature of the space and the fact that no-one had a fixed idea in their head as to what it should be - it meant that it was not a precious space but one that was always changing and being added to. Over the years that room was home to exhibitions, theatre and cabaret, workshops, lectures, slide shows, pantomimes, themed costume parties, installations, rehearsals ......
Both of the above projects, as well as much more, have fed my interest in the way that people and buildings interact, and how the spaces where people live and work can best support joint and creativity.
The feeling that I have at the Foyer is similar to that that I experienced in the building that Women In Profile had - that the physical structure is always open to change and can react easily to the changing needs of the people who stay or visit.
I like the way in which the Foyer is both open to the environment but also feels self-contained and cosy. The variety of spaces created by the structures means that there is always somewhere to feel comfortable and they seem to be conducive to meeting and talking with others. People passing by seem drawn to the site and feel easy about approaching the 'building' to find out more about what is going on. The artists and guests who stay or visit seem to feel almost immediately comfortable in their surroundings - they looked settled and at-home very quickly, chatting together over food or around the fire. The energies of the people who live and work 'full-time' in the Foyer operate in tandem with the structures themselves - they are absolutely necessary to this sense of openness and welcoming.
It seems that the luxuries make the basics seem not so basic. The fire in itself is a basic thing - but when there is also a shelter, running hot water near by, a cooker, delicious food - then the fire becomes a luxury in itself.
Before arriving I only had a vague idea of the structure of the Foyer and little idea of what I would do when I got here. Now that I have been here for almost a week I think that this was the best way to arrive. I like to get up each morning anew and just see what is happening, what is being planned or built or talked about, who is around and what I would like to do.
