brave Wednesday - where Paola has already been floating for a while / in her presence we slow down and talk together / Friese has arrived / Paola's friend Pascal Mabut visits from Geneva and Andrea's parents bring cake for us - lots of people are visiting / Simone is keeping the bar and Christina, David and Schnüffi visit before traveling to Hungary / the act of "floating" in my view seems to get a little traumatic since the audience concentrates on so many other things / Worker of the day: Paola Junqueira

I came to the Foyer because I was invited to perform my work 24 Hours Dreaming at the Foyer - from midnight on the 11th September until midnight on the 12th.
Ich wurde eingeladen am 11. September, Mitternacht bis 12. September, Mitternacht meine skulpturale Performance "24 Hours Dreaming" im Foyer aufzuführen.
I kept coming to the Foyer in order to enjoy Helle Naechte. I have been here four times now: before the Foyer was built, to see the work of Marc Mouci, with Niamh to bring part of my work and then again to put my work together and do my performance.
Professionally, my work is always about the creation of a space and about the interaction of this space with what is outside. 24 Hours Dreaming is about communicating with the unconscious as well as with the people who are around me when I am floating and dreaming. I am usually quite active when I am doing my work and interact with the people who are around me. This work is very different because I am asleep and not interacting directly with the people around me. I have to feel lighter and more relaxed about this work because once I start sleeping I am no longer able to control what happens in the environment in which the work is situated - I just have to let things happen around me. It was a powerful experience for me, but it is still too recent to be able to say exactly how I feel about it yet.
With this work 24 Hours Dreaming what I intended to do was to communicate from a space that was not rational, to communicate thoughts from the unconscious out and into a rational space - to produce a kind of spark in the conscious, an image that resonates from the past. Our unconscious has a huge influence on our conscious actions and it is this idea that makes the action of someone dreaming for 24 hours a very powerful image. It is a sculptural performance - the shape is very important: a kind of amoeba, very organic, with the use of water, and me floating and dreaming.
Where have you come from - what is your background?
I studied psychology in Brazil and I think that all my work is informed by ideas of psychology and human behaviour. My work is also influenced by an idea of Walter Benjamin's - that something is modern when we can catch an image, or an action, from the past and put it in the present - it makes a spark in our imaginations. I often use archaic images as well as play with the concept of time - my "24 Hour" works e.g. 24 Hours Dreaming, 24 Hours of a Hole are also about being present in a slowed down time, unlike the speed at which time goes in the present. I have performed 24 Hours of a Hole in London (UK), Hull (UK), Basel (Switzerland), Benares (India) and Bamako (Mali). I studied sculptural installations, but I also use story making as well as video, film and photography in my work.
Ich habe "24 Hours of a Hole" an vielen verschiedenen Orten gezeigt: London (UK), Hull (UK), Basel (Switzerland), Benares (India) and Bamako (Mali).
I think it works. If I think about my work I think that my work and my life are often very close. I visited the Foyer a few times before my performance so that I could build up this feeling of where my life and my art meet - by spending time living in the environment in which I would install my work, interacting with the artists and the other guests living here. Sometimes people get pissed off, or are happy, or...... - it is about life. So, I think the Foyer does work and shows how close the relation between art and life is.
Switzerland is well known for its luxuries - but maybe sometimes this means we forget about the basics. We might not have many luxuries here, but I can meet friends, talk about my work, and have affection with people and those are some of the basic things that we sometimes forget about. I don't think that there are any luxuries here, in the sense of big cars or fancy carpets, only basics. Here in the Foyer there are the basic things we need to live our lives in a very direct way and there is a concentration of people in the one space - I have to see everyone each morning, we share a toilet, we pass each other all the time - and I think this is very interesting.
I was surprised by the organisation. Helle Naechte is a very special project and I was very impressed by the way that the whole Foyer space is organised - how the kitchen works, where the little rooms are and so on. Also - Mona's Haute Cuisine!
